Hydroxyurea (Droxia, Hydrea, Siklos) belongs to a class of medications called antineoplastic agents. Hydroxyurea is used in the treatment of resistant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), the management of head and neck cancer, and the management of sickle cell anemia. In the treatment of certain cancers, hydroxyurea works to stop the cell cycle and stall it by interfering with DNA repair. In sickle cell anemia, hydroxyurea alters the characteristics of red blood cells (RBCs) so they are not as likely to get stuck in certain areas of the body and so that oxygen is moving freely around the body.
